Letters, 1862-1865.

Letters, 1862-1865, written by Brown to his wife Frances (Fannie), who was living in Barbour County (Ala.) during the war. The letters follow the 45th Ala. Infantry Regiment from its organization until its surrender in 1865. These letters are extremely well written and cover a multitude of subjects including politics, economic hardships, religion, the life of a soldier, battles, family in the army and in Alabama, the Confederate point of view, descriptions of different states, poetry, and philosophical musings. Of particular interest are Brown's discussions concerning his regiment, disease and illness, religious revivals, the lack of food, clothing, and supplies as well as analyses of battles and Confederate generals.
